Marvel and Square Enix announce The Avengers Project

Marvel Entertainment and Square Enix announced a multi-game partnership this past week which will last for many years. A teaser trailer for the beginning of this new partnership released, revealing The Avengers Project.

There are two studios working on The Avengers Project and future games, Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal. Crystal Dynamics is known for the Tomb Raider and Legacy of Kain series. Whereas, Eidos Montreal brought you the Dues Ex series and Thief.

At first, Square Enix and Marvel teased at an upcoming announcement in separate tweets. Kingdom Hearts fans got excited and hopeful it would be a Kingdom Hearts related announcement. Unfortunately, now Kingdom Hearts fans are mostly disappointed while they still wait for information on Kingdom Hearts 3. Many fans would also like to see Marvel characters make their way into Kingdom Hearts which is not entirely impossible.

While we didn’t get a lot of information from the teaser, it’s pretty clear the Avengers team is somewhat disassembled. That is kind of confirmed by the ‘#reassemble’ hashtag printed across the announcement and now we wonder in what way will the team reassemble. An MMORPG is an unlikely direction especially considering the multi-game plan as well as the studios working on the project.

“By partnering with Crystal Dynamics and Eidos-Montréal, we are now working with two of the industry’s most talented and respected game development studios to bring Marvel stories to life in ways our fans have never experienced,“

said Jay Ong, Senior Vice President, Games & Innovation, Marvel Entertainment.

What is The Avengers project all about?

There are no major details or specifics yet but we do know the direction of The Avengers project at least. Notably, The Avengers project will include all the characters, environments, and familiar stories from the long popular franchise. However, the story will be completely original in a universe that Marvel claims to keep gamers playing for ‘years to come’. Ong also said

“The Avengers project is a perfect example of how Marvel is making games a key part of the landscape for Marvel storytelling, alongside comics, television, and film. We can only do this by matching our greatest Super Heroes with the world’s top developers, such as the creative minds at Square Enix.”

Leaning the focus back towards consoles and PC games and not mobile games, Marvel is due to give DC some serious competition. With massive films like Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain America smashing the box office, it’s surely the right direction. That being said, we’ll have to see what the end game is like before making any major judgments. The game’s release is likely to not be until sometime 2018 or 2019.
