Ten great games like Horizon Zero Dawn

Horizon Zero Dawn graced our PlayStation 4s in 2017 and already sold over 7 million copies. With fantastic gameplay and a stunning post-apocalyptic open-world, Horizon Zero Dawn comes and goes pretty quickly, leaving fans wanting more. Gamers play as protagonist Aloy in a world ruled by tribal culture and machine animals.

Exploration and aesthetics are great in Horizon Zero Dawn but it absolutely nailed open world RPG narrative. So, you might wonder, what other games are like Horizon Zero Dawn? Where can I play more open world action RPGs similar to Horizon Zero Dawn? Here we have 10 games like Horizon Zero Dawn to keep you entertained until the sequel Horizon Zero Dawn 2.

What about a Horizon Zero Dawn Xbox One release date?

So far there is no good news on Horizon Zero Dawn for Xbox One. Horizon Zero Dawn’s developer Guerilla Games are also known for the Killzone series. Sadly, Guerilla Games are owned by Sony Interactive Entertainment which makes Horizon Zero Dawn currently a PlayStation exclusive. We would all love to see a Horizon Zero Dawn port to Xbox One and PC. Even a Nintendo Switch port for Horizon Zero Dawn but there is no word on the likelihood of that yet.

Horizon Zero Dawn looks amazing on PlayStation 4 Pro and that certainly caused a stir with Microsoft. Microsoft and Xbox One are soon to release the powerful Xbox One X. News sites quickly noted Microsoft hiring a Lead Environment Artist for an AAA game. The advert specifically stated “Style: similar to Horizon Zero Dawn”. Don’t get your hopes up too much because it won’t be Horizon Zero Dawn. However, at least there may be a new alternative coming to Xbox One X and in the meantime check out the games like Horizon Zero Dawn we’ve listed below.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

You may be waiting for The Witcher 4 as well as a Horizon Zero Dawn sequel but in the meantime, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a great substitute. Available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, The Witcher 3 boasts a massive open world full of side quests, secret finds, and a similar character progression to Horizon Zero Dawn. While you play as main character Geralt, the action won’t quite be exactly the same as with acrobatic Aloy in Horizon Zero Dawn. However, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt features a skill tree to improve your character’s skill set and a deeply engaging narrative that will easily eat up hours of time. Just like Horizon Zero Dawn did, The Witcher 3 gives meaning to all the world’s content. You won’t find yourself running off to collect meaningless junk just for the sake of doing something.

Rise of the Tomb Raider

One of the obvious similarities between Horizon Zero Dawn and Rise of the Tomb Raider is the female protagonist. Tomb Raider was one of the first games back in the 90s to feature a female lead. Now, it’s slightly more common to see a powerful, skilled woman like Aloy or Lara Croft leading a game’s storyline. Rise of the Tomb Raider farewells the 90s now featuring CG characters and real-time body physics. Scale walls, dive underwater, dodge traps, craft explosives, solve puzzles and use stealth to attack or avoid enemies. Follow an ancient mystery and explore stunning, detailed tombs in addition to scavenging, hunting, and crafting to boost your skills and gear. Rise of the Tomb Raider is available on Xbox One, PS4, and PC.

Middle Earth: Shadow of War

Horizon Zero Dawn’s world and that of Middle Earth Shadow of War may not seem very similar at first glance but there are some notable similarities. Middle Earth: Shadow of War has a dark, thrilling open world which is of course set in Tolkien’s Middle Earth. Players have a plethora of interesting side quests in addition to the main campaign. In Middle Earth: Shadow of War you can customize your skillset as your character progresses and you fight hordes of Orcs, Uruks, and Nazgul. All a journey through a dark and gritty world on your way to Morgoth’s favorite lieutenant, Sauron. There might not be any robots like in Horizon Zero Dawn. But Middle Earth has plenty of fun fantasy elements, movement, and combat to keep you entertained. Middle Earth: Shadow of War is available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

Monster Hunter World

Although the PC release is delayed, Monster Hunter: World released on PS4 and Xbox One on January 26, 2018. Forging action RPG elements with creature collection and an epic fantasy world, Monster Hunter World is a decent substitute for Horizon Zero Dawn. Like Horizon Zero Dawn, Capcom’s Monster Hunter: World has already shipped over 7.5 million units worldwide. Hunt monsters, complete quests and explore vast landscapes in single player or multiplayer. Monster Hunter: World also features in-depth systems for upgrading gear and skills, rewarding players for exploration and patience.

Assassin’s Creed Origins

Recently released, Assassin’s Creed Origins comes to mind when we think of games like Horizon Zero Dawn. Assassin’s Creed Origins steps it up a notch from previous installations offering huge amounts of quests including an entire underwater world to explore. Level up, loot, climb things and customize your abilities until you become the assassin you’ve always wanted to be.

Set in Ancient Egypt, Origins is the edition of Assassin’s Creed many of us have been waiting years for. Origins takes players deep into Ancient Egyptian politics and visits well-known figures Cleopatra and Julius Caesar. Like Horizon Zero Dawn exploration is rewarded and veering off your regular path in Assassin’s Creed Origins leads to great things. Exploring can gain players great loot, world lore, and secrets that are all clues to the greater picture. Get Assassin’s Creed Origins now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

Enslaved Odyssey to the West

From Bandai Namco and Ninja Theory comes Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, a fantastic alternative to Horizon Zero Dawn. Set 150 years in the future, the world of Enslaved: Odyssey to the West is a post-apocalyptic American future ravaged by war and destruction. Slave ships come to harvest what is left of the human population taking them far out West. Two slavers, Trip, and Monkey are linked together at Trip’s will and must escape a slave ship and journey to freedom. Trip is technologically savvy while Monkey is more about brute force. This dynamic creates a complex and interesting relationship between the 2 main characters.

Similar to Horizon Zero Dawn, Enslaved grips players into an epic storyline amongst a world overtaken by nature and machina. With amazing performance capture animation by Andy Serkis bide your time waiting for more Horizon Zero Dawn by smashing through robots in the beautiful world of Enslaved: Odyssey to the West. Enslaved: Odyssey to the West is available on PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.

Elex is another game with some elements that Horizon Zero Dawn shares. Straight out of THQ Nordic and Piranha Bytes, Elex blends together magic, technology, fantasy, and science fiction in a post-apocalyptic world. From the creators of Gothic, Elex is an open world action RPG where magic versus technology. Players must fight to survive after the planet, Magalan, is devastated by a meteor. Now the world’s inhabitants fight each other over the precious resource Elex and players are met with deep moral choices. Experience a wide and open world full of interesting storylines. All complemented by interactions between Elex’s factions, quests, skillset customization, and challenging AI combat. Elex is available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

Nier Automata

Nier: Automata released in March 2017 and got great reviews on game news sites as well as Steam. From Square Enix, Nier: Automata blew people away with fun and gratifying combat in addition to an interesting storyline set in a machine-driven dystopia. However, it’s important to note there are some pretty negative Steam reviews now for the PC port. So Nier Automata may be a game you want to stick to console with. Regardless of that Nier: Automata tells the story of 3 androids in a battle to reclaim Earth for humanity.

In particular, Nier: Automata is packed full of fast-paced combat with a good mix of melee, ranged, and evasion combat. Fight through multiple maps, bosses, and hordes of enemies switching up your arsenal when you see fit. Similar to Horizon Zero Dawn, Nier: Automata has a beautiful seamless open world with side quests and RPG elements that fit the story. Back that up with a variety of weapon types and customizable ‘pods’ to support your gameplay and we’ve got a winner. Nier: Automata is available on PC and PS4.

Left Alive

Left Alive is releasing some time in 2018 on PC and PS4. As a result, we added it to the list. For players who feel like Horizon Zero Dawn with a bit more shooter. Developed and published by Square Enix, Left Alive features some great developers from games like Metal Gear Solid, Ghost in the Shell: Arise, and Xenoblade Chronicles X. Much like Horizon: Zero Dawn Left Alive has machines and one major difference is the addition of 2 more protagonists. Set in Novo Slava, 2127 the 3 protagonists offer 3 different perspectives to the human story of survival against machines. That’s 3 unique story paths with consequences driven by player choice and multiple play styles. Left Alive also features crafting, traps, and collectibles with a focus on exploration and narrative.

Darksiders 3

Darksiders 3 is another game that’s not quite here yet. But will release sometime in 2018. In replacement of Aloy from Horizon: Zero Dawn. Gamers get to play one of the Four Horsemen. As Fury, players wield a whip and magic in addition to a variety of other weapons. Like other Darksiders games, Darksiders 3 keeps to the classic hack-n-slash action adventure style. Moreover, Fury can play in multiple forms and use abilities. Traversal skills as she is a magic-wielding mage. Explore Earth overrun by the Sins and their minions and prove you are the most powerful of the Four Horsemen.

Honorable mentions:  Deus Ex Human Revolution, Mass Effect, Dishonored, Far Cry Primal, Pyre, Thief, and Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
